Kris Versteeg is going to be out of the Calgary Flames lineup for at least the next few weeks because of a groin injury that happened early in a recent game against the San Jose Sharks.

The team announced the news on Saturday with coach Glen Gulutzan officially saying that Versteeg’s status is “week-to-week.”

“It’s his groin,” Gulutzan said via the team’s website. “Those things can linger so we’re looking at two or three weeks here, to see where he’s at. He did tweak his groin a little bit but the beauty is that it’s not completely gone or anything. He should be okay.”

“Not completely gone” is usually a positive development when it comes to a groin injury, so yes, that is in fact good news.

Hunter Shinkaruk has been called up from the AHL to replace Versteeg.

The past few months have been quite an adventure for Versteeg. After going through almost the entire offseason without getting an NHL contract, he seemed to be on his way to Switzerland before he ended up with the Edmonton Oilers on a tryout contract. But instead of signing with the Oilers, he eventually signed with the Calgary Flames. Almost immediately after inking that one-year deal he opened the season skating on the team’s top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. He has also spent time alongside Sam Bennett and Troy Brouwer.

In nine games this season Versteeg has two goals (both coming in the same game against the St. Louis Blues) and two assists.
