The Toronto Maple Leafs had been searching for a veteran backup goaltender and they’ve finally settled on someone.

On Monday, the team announced that they’ve signed Jhonas Enroth to a one-year, $750,000 deal.

In late July, there were some rumblings about the Leafs and Enroth closing in on an agreement, but things went quiet after that.

The 28-year-old saw limited action in 2015-16 because he sat behind workhorse Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles. Enroth posted a 7-5-1 record with a 2.17 goals-against-average and a .922 save percentage in 16 games.

Enroth will serve as the backup goaltender to Frederik Andersen, who the Leafs acquired from Anaheim this off-season.

Andersen has played 54 and 43 games in the last two seasons. He’ll likely see close to 60 starts in his first year as the go-to guy in Toronto, which means that Enroth will probably see a little more action than he saw last year.

This doesn’t mean that Enroth has locked up the backup gig though. His $750,000 cap hit can be buried in the minors without any ramifications on the team’s salary cap.

Enroth’s biggest competition will come from Garret Sparks, who signed a two-way deal this off-season.
