The Dallas Stars took some huge strides last season. After finishing with 92 points and out of the playoffs in 2014-15, they managed to finish at the top of the Western Conference with 109 points last season.

There are many reasons for Dallas’ recent success. Most notably, the potent one-two punch of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin up front.

Of course, it also doesn’t hurt when you have a supporting cast of Jason Spezza and Patrick Sharp, who combined to score 118 points.

The Stars also received some notable contributions from their puck-moving defensemen. John Klingberg had a fantastic season, as he scored 10 goals and a career-high 58 points in 76 games. Alex Goligoski and Jason Demers (who are both gone) also chipped in offensively.

The problem with Dallas remains their goaltending. GM Jim Nill will have a hard time repairing his mistake. He committed $10.4 million to Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi and both were mediocre at times last season.

Off-season recap

The Stars didn’t add many pieces this off-season, but they certainly took care of some important business.

The team signed Benn to a massive eight-year, $76 million extension last month. The new deal kicks in after next season.

Dallas’ defense was dealt a bit of a blow this summer. They traded Goligoski’s negotiating rights to Arizona, they watched as Demers packed his bags for Florida and it looks like they have no interest in bringing back free agent Kris Russell.

They attempted to fill one of those voids by signing former Canuck Dan Hamhuis. The other hole will need to be filled by someone already in the organization.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Stars can recreate the magic they had last year.
