Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan was given a major penalty for boarding after he hit Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang from behind into the boards early in the first period of Game 1.
Callahan’s penalty did not include a game misconduct, but may draw further attention from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. Letang remained down on the ice, before getting back to his skates and leaving for the dressing room.
Letang has since returned to the game.
The Penguins were unable to score on the five-minute power play opportunity.
