‘I’ve been hit more times than when I played': Capuano’s fine after taking puck to the nose

Islanders coach Jack Capuano was struck in the face by a puck in the third period of Game 1.

Things happen quickly on the ice, just ask Jack Capuano.

During Game 1 of the Islanders’ series against Tampa Bay, Capuano took a puck to the nose. He was forced to leave the game momentarily, but he did manage to return. Thankfully, Capuano didn’t suffer a serious injury.

“A little bit of a headache right now,” Capuano said after New York’s Game 1 win. “I’ve been hit more times (behind the bench) than when I played. It caught the tip of my nose, fortunately it wasn’t anything more serious.”

As Newsday’s Arthur Staple points out, this isn’t the first time Capuano’s been hit while standing behind the bench. The Islanders coach needed five stitches above his right eye after taking a puck to the face during the 2012-13 season.

“You’re just concerned because he went down so hard,” defenseman Travis Hamonic said. “We’re glad he was OK. He’s battling.

“We obviously would prefer him back there, but we all have to keep playing.”
