The Ottawa Senators named Pierre Dorion as their new General Manager on Sunday and just two days later, he’s made a major decision.
The Senators announced that they’ve fired head coach Dave Cameron, assistants Andre Tourigny, Rick Wamsley and Jason Smith (offered another position in the organization).
After making the playoffs last year, the Sens missed the postseason with a 38-35-9 record in 2015-16.
This is the second coaching change in just over 16 months for the Senators. Ottawa fired Paul MacLean on Dec. 8, 2014 and named Cameron as his replacement. The change worked out perfectly for the Sens, as they had an incredible second half of the season (32-15-8) and managed to get into the playoffs.
The Senators were bounced in the first round, but they put up a great fight against the Canadiens before losing in six games.
Bryan Murray, who was the General Manager at the time, decided to remove the interim tag from Cameron’s title, and gave the coach a two-year contract extension. Less than one year after being given the extension, Cameron is now out the door.
Who might replace Cameron?
Former Wild coach Mike Yeo will come highly recommended by the people in Minnesota. My guess is he'll be a candidate. #Sens
