Video: After ‘shocking’ altercation with Polak, Nurse to have disciplinary hearing

Darnell Nurse’s actions on Tuesday night have earned him a meeting with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

After jumping Roman Polak late in San Jose’s 3-0 win over the Oilers -- a move described as “kind of shocking” and “terrible” by various members of the Sharks -- Nurse has been scheduled for a Thursday disciplinary hearing under Rule 46.2 (Aggressor).

Per the NHL rule book, the infraction reads like this:

The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.

A player must be deemed the aggressor when he has clearly won the fight but he continues throwing and landing punches in a further attempt to inflict punishment and/or injury on his opponent who is no longer in a position to defend himself.

A player who is deemed to be the aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct. A player who is deemed to be the aggressor of an altercation will have this recorded as an aggressor of an altercation for statistical and suspension purposes.

A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

Nurse wasn’t given an instigator on the play, but did receive a fighting major and roughing minor.

Needless to say, the Sharks were displeased with the rookie d-man’s antics.

“It was terrible,” Logan Couture said, per CSN Bay Area. “I was right on the bench. Roman accidentally trips [Matt] Hendricks. I guess he stepped on his stick, I don’t know. Then he’s trying to change. Nurse has the puck, shoots it at him, drops his gloves and jumps him.

“Roman didn’t even have his gloves off. Our guy jumped onto the ice because Roman was coming off. Then [Nurse] starts punching him and Roman couldn’t even defend himself. It’s clearly an instigator and I’m sure he’ll be suspended.”
