The Carolina Hurricanes were less than a second away from losing in regulation to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

However, Jeff Skinner’s slap shot from the slot beat Andrew Hammond on the glove side, with the puck rattling around the net a split second before the horn went to end the third period. That tied the game at three goals apiece and forced overtime.

The Hurricanes eventually won in the shootout by a final score of 4-3.

That’s a huge comeback win for the Hurricanes and their playoff hopes. They move four points back of the Detroit Red Wings -- losers in regulation against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday and losers of three straight -- for the final Wild Card spot in the East.

The shootout loss keeps the Senators five points back of Detroit.
