‘It’s just a hockey play,’ says Ovechkin of his boarding major on Miller

The Washington Capitals came away with a 2-1 overtime win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday, but a boarding major called against Alex Ovechkin is garnering plenty of post-game reaction.

Ovechkin was assessed the penalty for a hit from behind on Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller in the second period. The Capitals star was not assessed a game misconduct, while Miller left the game and didn’t return.

“I don’t like seeing those hits. If it’s five for boarding, it kind of shows the severity of it, and I’m disappointed that our player wasn’t able to come back, and who knows, if it’s somebody else [besides Ovechkin], is it a game? You guys can answer that question yourselves,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien, as per CSNNE.com.

Ovechkin, who added an assist on Washington’s first goal of the night, scored by Karl Alzner after the major penalty, doesn’t believe the hit is worthy of further discipline from the league.

“Oh, it’s just a hockey play,” said Ovechkin, as per NESN.com.

“I tried to kind of, like -- I don’t try to hit him. I didn’t see a replay, but my motion was not like try to headhunt. I just try to play the puck, and he kind of turned, and there was a hit. At least, I told the referee I didn’t try to go through him or something, just trying to pin him.”

“No, I don’t think it’s (worthy) of suspension or something. I don’t try to hit the head, just try to be in my spot and make a play. He’s turning at the boards.”
