More than two months after it started, the Washington Capitals’ streak of consecutive wins on home ice has come to an end.
The Capitals hadn’t lost at Verizon Center since Nov. 19, 2015 -- a span of 12 games. (The Capitals had two home games postponed due to last week’s snowstorm.)
But that streak came to an end Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Flyers upset the Capitals, the league’s top team in the standings, by a final score of 4-3 in overtime, with Jakub Voracek scoring the winning goal -- his second of the night -- 38 seconds into the three-on-three session.
The goal was reviewed after a coach’s challenge.
At 0:38 of overtime in the Flyers/Capitals game, the Situation Room initiated a review under the terms of a Coach’s Challenge to review whether Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek interfered with Washington goaltender Braden Holtby prior to his goal.
After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee confirmed no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line.
Therefore the original call stands – good goal Philadelphia Flyers.
Capitals’ forward Marcus Johansson left the game after the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.
