There’s plenty happening on the Arizona sports scene over the next few days -- the Coyotes host the Sharks tonight and the Kings on Saturday. On Sunday, Cardinals will take on the Panthers in the NFC Championship.

And on Thursday, the two teams’ worlds collided a bit.

Prior to tonight’s ceremony at Gila River Arena -- Shane Doan will be honored for surpassing Dale Hawerchuk as the franchise’s all-time goals leader -- the hero of Arizona’s unforgettable OT win over Green Bay, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, spoke about his level of respect for Doan, and their friendship.

For those that can’t view the media, the transcript:

“One thing that makes him special is the fact that he’s wanted to stay in the same franchise. He’s had many opportunities throughout the course of his career, he could’ve gone different places, but he chose to stick it out and be the centerpiece of the foundation of this organization.

“You couldn’t ask for a better representative of our Valley, for the Coyotes. He’s done a great job not only on the ice, but in the community. I couldn’t be happier for him, and to be able to call him a friend is a great honor.”

Despite being one of the league’s oldest players at age 39, Doan is enjoying a pretty solid campaign. He has 16 goals through 36 games, and is on pace for his highest total since scoring a career-best 31 during the ’08-09 season.
