This could be Patrik Elias’ final campaign in the NHL and unfortunately it’s been riddled with adversity.

The New Jersey Devils have announced that Elias is on the injured reserve list. His right knee problems, which cost him the first 20 games of the season, are once again the source, per The Record. For what it’s worth though, he previously stated that his current issue is unrelated to his previous injury, even if the general location is the same.

The move is retroactive to Dec. 21, so he can be activated at any time. However, he’s been off the ice for a week now, so his return might not be in the near future.

Elias also missed New Jersey’s game on Dec. 20, but he was listed as a healthy scratch for that contest. Although Elias took issue with that term.

The 39-year-old is in the final season of his three-year, $16.5 million contract.

Update: The Devils have activated Bobby Farnham, per The Record’s Tom Gulitti.
