Gallagher exits game after blocking Boychuk’s shot with his hand (update)

Johnny Boychuk has one of the hardest shots in the NHL, so blocking one with your hand probably isn’t a good idea.

Brendan Gallagher found that out the hard way, as he was forced from Sunday’s game for that reason.

The injury is problematic for Montreal because they’re already thin at right wing.

If Gallagher is out for an extended period of time, it could open the door for Alexander Semin to get more ice time.

Montreal is already without Torrey Mitchell, Devante Smith-Pelly and Alexei Emelin.

The Habs and Islanders are tied 2-2 in the third period.

Update: The Canadiens announced that Gallagher suffered two broken fingers on the play. He’ll have surgery on Monday and is out indefinitely.
