Kyle Quincey’s been out of the Red Wings lineup since Oct. 23.

And he won’t be back anytime soon.

On Wednesday, the club announced that Quincey would undergo surgery to repair an ankle injury, a procedure that will sideline him for the next six weeks.

The injury -- which coincided with a concussion -- occurred during training camp after Quincey stepped on teammate Justin Abdelkader‘s skate. Quincey said it’s not unlike the ailment he suffered last season, which required bone chips to be removed surgically.

Given that he could be out of Detroit’s lineup until January, Quincey’s loss is significant.

The 30-year-old was off to a nice start this season, with three points in his first three games while averaging 18 minutes per night. He’d also been pretty durable over the last two seasons — missing just nine games all told — and the Wings’ depth on defense has been tested lately, as Mike Green only just returned from an injury of his own.

In last night’s win over Washington, head coach Jeff Blashill leaned heavily on four d-men as Green, Niklas Kronwall, Danny DeKeyser and Jonathan Ericsson all played over 22 minutes.

Jakub Kindl and Alexey Marchenko, meanwhile, were both held to under 15.
