Stamkos’ agent is ‘engaged’ in talks with Lightning

It’s not likely to be easy to re-sign Steven Stamkos, but at least it sounds like his reps are speaking with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Agent Don Meehan explained as much to TSN 1050, (transcribed by the Tampa Bay Times).

“All that we’re really doing at this point in time is taking a little bit more time,” Meehan said. “But we’re engaged with Steve Yzerman. And as I say, we have a great relationship with him ... I really think that you have to practice due diligence to the nth degree.”

Meehan makes a great point in his full comments: you only get so many cracks at a big contract, which Stamkos is easily in line for.

From one standpoint, due diligence is a good way to go, as Stamkos’ value isn’t likely to drop ... even if his relatively slow start is a sign of more things to come.

That said, you never know how things might turn, especially in a dangerous sport like hockey. If the Lightning float the kind of deal that works for Stamkos, maybe we’ll get a conclusion to this story sooner than expected.

Of course, respectful proceedings could turn to more tense arguments if deadlines approach, though.
