In a prominent “Headlines” segment on Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman vaguely discussed trade murmurs regarding (pause for suspense even though the headline gave it away): Patrick Marleau.

Some of the keys from Friedman’s carefully worded report:

  • There’s no evidence that Marleau was asked to waive his no-movement clause.
  • No teams were bandied about, but Friedman insists that Marleau’s name is “definitely out there.”

Marleau was definitely out there ... on the ice, that is, for the San Jose Sharks that same Saturday night. He generated some chances, but wasn’t able to beat Anton Khudobin, who notched a 1-0 shutout for the Anaheim Ducks.

Looking at his reactions via CSNBayArea.com’s Kevin Kurz, it sounds like Marleau hasn’t heard much of merit, and he might be a little tired of hearing his name batted around in rumors.

So, it sounds like the current response is “nothing to see here.”

Will fire eventually be found after all these whispers about smoke at some point, though?
