Even a good night for Columbus can’t be without a bit of adversity.

The Blue Jackets, who put together arguably their best performance of the season Tuesday with a 5-2 win in San Jose, lost the services of veteran forward David Clarkson after an awkward collision with Sharks alternate captain Joe Thornton.

More, from the club:

Clarkson was back-checking and tracking Thornton up the ice when they got tangled up at the Columbus blue line. Clarkson fell to the ice and spun toward the boards, and was in visible discomfort as he skated back to the bench.

A few minutes later, he headed down the tunnel to the Blue Jackets dressing room and did not return.

Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella did not have much of an update post game, but he did confirm Clarkson left the game due to injury.

Clarkson, acquired from Toronto last season, has had little health luck since joining the Jackets. He’s missed time already this season with a lower-body injury and, last season, suffered a season-ending torn oblique in March.

The 31-year-old has spent this year in a bottom-six forward role, scoring one point in eight games while averaging just under 10 minutes per night.

If he’s to miss any time, it’s likely Rene Bourque or Alexander Wenneberg would draw back in. Columbus next plays on Thursday in Los Angeles, then Friday in Anaheim.
