Mike Condon might not be a household name, but he definitely caught the hockey world’s attention on Sunday night.
With no other games on the schedule, the 25-year-old turned aside 20 shots in a 3-1 win over the Senators.
Coming into tonight’s game much of the focus was on two rookie goaltenders, but only one stood out for the right reasons.
Condon looked cool and confident throughout the contest and he didn’t let the bright lights get the better of him.
He made several key saves in the contest, including this one on Senators forward Mark Stone and this one on Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
The same couldn’t be said for Senators rookie Matt O’Connor. The 23-year-old was fooled by a Tomas Plekanec shot from below the goal line.
O’Connor settled down as the game wore on, but he was clearly the second best goaltender in this game.
Montreal got another goal from Plekanec in the first period, before Jean-Gabriel Pageau broke Condon’s shutout with a shorthanded tally in the second period.
The Canadiens put the game away early in the third when a Torrey Mitchell deflection fooled Ottawa’s rookie goaltender.
Montreal is off to a hot start, as they’ve already collected road wins in Toronto, Boston and Ottawa. They will now finish their four-game road trip in Pittsburgh on Tuesday before heading to the Bell Center for their home opener against the Rangers on Thursday.
