NHL journeyman Gillies signs in Slovak league

Colton Gillies, the 16th overall pick in ’07 that’s appeared in nearly 150 NHL contests, has signed with Slovakian club side HC Banska Bystrica, the team announced on Tuesday.

Gillies, 26, spent last season with the Islanders’ AHL affiliate in Bridgeport. His last NHL action came with Columbus during the lockout-shortened ’13 campaign, in which he scored two points in 27 games -- following his stint with the Blue Jackets, Gillies caught on with Buffalo and its AHL affiliate in Rochester.

It was with Minnesota -- the team that drafted him -- where Gillies scored his lengthiest NHL stint.

Unfortunately, he’s largely remembered as one of the Wild’s numerous failed first-round picks in the middle part of the decade. Others include James Sheppard (ninth overall, ’06), Tyler Cuma (23rd overall, ’08) and A.J. Thelen (12th overall, ’04).
