The Calgary Flames will be without one of their top defensemen to start the season. The club announced today that T.J. Brodie broke his hand Monday against Edmonton and will be out 3-6 weeks.
Brodie played 81 games last season, finishing with 41 points while averaging 25:12 of ice time. At five on five, the 25-year-old was almost always paired with Flames captain Mark Giordano. (When Giordano was hurt, Brodie skated mostly with Deryk Engelland.)
The good news for Brodie is that he won’t require surgery.
The good news for the Flames is that they added Dougie Hamilton in the offseason, so there’s more depth on the back end to withstand a key loss.
Still, Brodie will be missed. Calgary opens the regular season Oct. 7 versus Vancouver.
Brodie suffered the broken mid-way through the third period of Monday's game against Edmonton. He was hit by a shot from the point.
