Doug Janik, who appeared in nearly 200 NHL contests over a 10-year career, has retired from professional hockey and joined the coaching ranks.
On Tuesday, the Coyotes announced that Janik would serve as one of Ron Rolston’s assistants with their new AHL affiliate in Springfield. Janik, 35, spent last season playing in the Italian League, and made his last NHL appearance with Detroit during the 2011-12 campaign.
All told, Janik played for five different clubs during his NHL career -- the Red Wings, Sabres, Lightning, Stars and Canadiens -- with his best season coming in ’06-07, when he scored 11 points in 75 games for the Lightning.
Janik wasn’t the only assistant Arizona hired on Tuesday.
Mike Bavis, 45, joined Springfield after nearly two decades on Boston University’s staff, including four seasons as associate coach under longtime bench boss Jack Parker.
