From the Associated Press:

A man who once tried to pull off an audacious scam to buy the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for another fraud case in northeast Ohio.

Fifty-year-old John Spano Jr. was sentenced Thursday in Painesville, 30 miles east of Cleveland, after pleading guilty last month to 16 counts of forgery.

We wrote last month about Spano’s latest scam. In this one, he collected commissions from selling to false accounts that he’d created. The details of that from an earlier Associated Press story:

Spano was hired as a driver for a company that provides laundry services to medical facilities, police said. He was promoted to salesman, which is when he began creating the fake accounts for which he was paid commissions. Police said he ran the operation from an office he set up inside a self-storage unit.

This will be Spano’s third trip to prison.

Somebody throw a hat.
