Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price might win the Vezina and maybe even Hart Trophy this year, but for tonight at least, he was edged out by one of his chief rivals in Pekka Rinne in a 3-2 overtime loss to Nashville.

Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm gave Nashville an early edge tonight when he scored from his knees after being tripped by Montreal’s Tomas Plekanec. It was just Ekholm’s seventh goal in 137 contests.

Montreal battled back, but Canadiens blueliner P.K. Subban was charged with a tripping penalty in overtime and Filip Forsberg took advantage of the situation.

Price finished the contest with 28 saves on 31 shots while Rinne turned aside 27 of 29 shots at the other end of the ice. They earned the third and second stars respectively.

The silver lining for the Canadiens is that with the consolation point, they are the first team to reach the 100-point mark. However, they have played in two more games than the New York Rangers, which trail them by just one point. Nashville is also a mere two points behind Montreal in an extremely tight battle for the Presidents’ Trophy:
