Embattled Leafs forward Nazem Kadri will sit out the last of his three-game punishment tonight when Toronto takes on Calgary, and will draw back into the lineup for Saturday’s tilt in Vancouver.

Not without a few residual effects, however.

Kadri: “I’m embarrassed about it. It’s a lesson learned. That’s how I’m going to approach it. I’m a little bit humiliated.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Kadri responds to his punishment, which was initially doled out after sleeping in and missing a team meeting on Sunday, then extended midweek by Leafs president Brendan Shanahan, who said Kadri’s suspension was about more than just tardiness.

Kadri, who sits fourth on the team in goals (16) and points (36), will need to show something over the final 14 games of the season, as this summer promises to be an integral one for both him and the Leafs organization. The club is in the midst of a tear-down/rebuild and while Toronto brass has publicly voiced support for Kadri as a part of its future, the 24-year-old does need a new contract this offseason and it’s fair to suggest how he responds to this punishment will play a role in negotiations.
