It took a little while, but the New York Islanders have managed to build a competitive team around star forward John Tavares. While his supporting cast has improved though, there’s no question that Tavares remains the Islanders’ single biggest asset.

If the 24-year-old had regressed this season then the Islanders likely wouldn’t be the current Metropolitan Division leaders, but as it is he’s having one of the best campaigns of his career. Tavares has been particularly effective lately with points in nine of his last 11 contests going into tonight’s game against the Florida Panthers. He continued that trend Saturday by capitalizing on a turnover:

That was his 32nd goal of 2014-15, breaking his previous career-high set in 2011-2012. He has an assist in the contest too, giving him 69 points in 67 games this season. That means there’s a decent chance he’ll also end up beating his personal best of 81 points in 82 contests.
