Trade: Minnesota acquires Bergenheim from Florida

The Minnesota Wild have made their second trade in as many months, acquiring veteran forward Sean Bergenheim from Florida in exchange for a third-round pick at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Minnesota will also receive the Panthers’ seventh-rounder in ’16.

Bergenheim, 31, has been on the outs in Florida for a while now -- a healthy scratch in each of the last six games -- as GM Dale Tallon looked made a trade. While he has been productive (18 points in 39 games, averaging 14:09 TOI), Bergenheim wasn’t in Florida’s future plans as the club looked to move forward with its youth movement, especially at forward.

He’ll certainly have more of a role in Minnesota. Bergenheim will replace some of the forward depth lost with Ryan Carter, Matt Cooke and Jason Zucker all sidelined with injury.

Bergenheim is in the last of a four-year, $11 million deal (a $2.75M cap hit) signed with Florida in 2011. Per ESPN, the Panthers aren’t retaining any of his salary in this trade.

As mentioned above, this is the second deal Wild GM Chuck Fletcher has orchestrated recently. Back in mid-January, he pulled off the season-altering Devan Dubnyk deal, getting the goalie from Arizona for a third-round pick as well.
