On Monday, Philly announced that Ray Emery’s dealing with a lower-body injury, one that prevented him from traveling with the club to Carolina for Tuesday’s game against the ‘Canes.
Emery, who’d been the goalie of record for six straight games from Feb. 8-19, had recently ceded the No. 1 gig to Rob Zepp, who backstopped Philly to a pair of key wins over the weekend -- a 3-2 shootout victory over the Preds on Saturday and a 3-2 regulation win over the Caps on Sunday. That sweep of the back-to-back moved the Flyers to within two points of Boston for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
And now the Flyers might have their No. 1 ‘tender back.
Steve Mason, who has yet to be medically cleared, will make his return in a reserve role and back up Zepp for tomorrow’s tilt. It’s assumed Mason’s clearance will come tomorrow, and which time both he and the organization will take a wait-and-see approach for a potential return to game action.
Mason, who hasn’t played in nearly three weeks while recovering from knee surgery, had been very good prior to getting hurt. Mason is 11-12-7 on the year with a 2.27 GAA and . 925 save percentage.
