The Detroit Red Wings have placed defenseman Brian Lashoff on waivers.
Why would they do such a thing?
Here’s Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily to explain:
Placing Lashoff on waivers allows the team to keep Xavier Ouellet on the team for the rest of the season. Leaving Kindl as the seventh D-man

Before waivers, the Wings tried to trade Lashoff for draft picks and could find no takers. Meaning he'll likely be heading to Grand Rapids.

Unless he’s claimed, of course. The 24-year-old has appeared in 11 games for the Wings this season, registering two assists while averaging 13:17 of ice time.
Lashoff is signed through next season.
Update from Ansar Khan of MLive.com:
As it turns out, Wings have reassigned Ouellet to Grand Rapids and recalled Alexey Marchenko, Ken Holland said.

Marchenko, a right-shooting d-man, has two goals and 15 assists in 42 games for the Griffins this season.
