Ottawa Senators forward David Legwand has teamed up with retired NHL defenseman Derian Hatcher to buy the OHL Sarnia Sting from current owner Larry Ciccarelli, per the league’s website.

“This is an exciting day for both David and myself,” Hatcher said. “We know this area extremely well and look forward to building something special in Sarnia. We are committed to this community and are excited to get started once we have approval from the OHL and its Board of Governors.”

Hatcher and Legwand are both products of the Ontario Hockey League, so their decision to buy the Sting hits close to home.

Sarnia, which at one time employed Steven Stamkos, produced two first-round draft picks in 2014 in Anthony DeAngelo (19th, Tampa Bay) and Nikolay Goldobin (27th, San Jose). The 2014-15 squad features forward Pavel Zacha, who might be a top-10 pick in this year’s draft. Nikita Korostelev isn’t as highly regarded as Zacha, but he might also end up going high in the 2015 draft.

The Sting have a 22-16-3-2 record this season.
