Already battered Flyers blueline suffers two more losses

For the Philadelphia Flyers, the All-Star break could not come soon enough. Forget the fact that they have lost three of their last four games, including a 7-4 defeat versus the New York Islanders this afternoon. Push aside their diminishing playoff chances. Just finding enough healthy bodies to play is becoming a challenge.

The Flyers announced that defensemen Nick Schultz and Carlo Colaiacovo both sustained upper-body injuries during Monday’s game. Schultz won’t play on Tuesday while Colaiacovo is being regarded as questionable.

That brings them down to four healthy blueliners on their active roster, compared to their sickbay which also includes defensemen Braydon Coburn, Nicklas Grossmann, and Kimmo Timonen. You could technically throw Chris Pronger in there too as he’s still drawing a salary.

Philadelphia will need to call up some additional help prior to Tuesday’s contest against Pittsburgh and one likely candidate is Brandon Manning, who has 25 points and 86 penalty minutes in 36 AHL contests this season. The 24-year-old also enjoyed a two-game stint with Philadelphia earlier this season and registered an assist over that span.
