Versteeg suffered a left hand injury while blocking a shot during Thursday’s Winter Classic loss to the Washington Capitals.
The 28-year-old was in the middle of a bounce-back season recording nine goals and 27 points in 34 games. He had 29 points all of last season.
With Versteeg out, the Blackhawks have recalled prospect Teuvo Teravainen from the Rockford IceHogs.
Teravainen skated on a line with Dan Carcillo and Ben Smith during the team’s practice Saturday.
The 20-year-old will make his season debut Sunday when the Blackhawks play host to the Dallas Stars.
