The New Jersey Devils lost to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, and could lose forward Steve Bernier for even longer due to injury.

Bernier went to deliver a hit on defenseman Brendan Smith, but missed and appeared to hit his knee into the boards. He was down on the ice in pain and had to be helped off with the assistance of two teammates, unable to put any pressure on his left leg.

“It’s not good, though, I can tell you that,” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told Fire & Ice.

“When you see somebody go down like that and stay, especially when you know the player, he’s a player who doesn’t stay down when he gets hit. Unfortunately, I think it’s fairly serious.”
