Just days after being loaned out from the NHL, Curtis Lazar was appointed Team Canada’s captain for the upcoming World Junior Championship.

Lazar, on hiatus from his rookie year in Ottawa, will head a leadership group that includes alternate captains Connor McDavid and Sam Reinhart, who started the year with Buffalo before being returned to WHL Kootenay.

“Curtis, Connor and Sam have all represented Canada internationally on several occasions and bring great experience and leadership to these roles,” Canada head coach Benoit Groulx said Monday in a statement. “While these three players will wear letters, this team is blessed with many leaders and success will take a collective effort at all levels, including on the leadership side.”

Lazar was an easy choice as team captain, having played for Canada at last year’s Worlds while boasting the most NHL experience of any player on the roster. The 19-year-old has seven points in 27 games for the Sens this year and sits third among all NHL rookies in hits, with 58.
