Report: Lightning’s Bishop suffers lower body injury

Ben Bishop

After facing five Pittsburgh Penguins shots in the first period, Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop did not return to start the second period.

The team announced soon after that Bishop is suffering from a lower body injury and will not return tonight.

According to coach Jon Cooper, the team was trying to show precaution in handling Bishop’s injury.

Evgeni Nabokov has taken over in the Tampa Bay net.

Bishop entered Monday’s action with a 16-6-2 record to go along a 2.34 goals against average.

Tampa Bay visits Philadelphia Tuesday night before another set of back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against the Devils and Islanders.

The good news for the Lightning is if they do need to recall a goaltender from the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch, Andrei Vasilevskiy was named the Player of the Week on Monday.

Vasilevskiy allowed one goal on 56 shots winning both his starts last week. He posted a 0.50 goals-against average and a .982 save percentage in the two games.

In 14 appearances this season, Vasilevskiy is 8-3-3 with a 2.34 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage to go along with two shutouts.
