No hearing scheduled for Garbutt after kneeing Hall

Dallas forward Ryan Garbutt doesn’t have a disciplinary hearing scheduled for his knee-on-knee collisions with Edmonton’s Taylor Hall on Tuesday night, a NHL spokesman has confirmed.

Garbutt was hit with a two-minute tripping penalty for this hit, which occurred midway through the third period of Dallas’ 3-2 win:

Hall wasn’t injured on the play, and remained in the game.

It’s worth mentioning, however, that knee-on-knee hits were a topic of conversation at last week’s GM Meetings, as NHL disciplinary czar Stephane Quintal addressed a noticeable spike in incidents through the first month of the season.

As for Garbutt, it appears he’ll avoid punishment despite his status as a repeat offender. Last season he was fined for a spear on Ducks’ forward Corey Perry and, during the lockout-shortened ’13 campaign, Garbutt was suspended five games for a hit on Dustin Penner.

The league reserves the right to schedule a hearing with Garbutt later if it sees fit. That said, such a decision would need to be reached relatively quickly as the Stars are back in action on Friday night against Minnesota.
