The Detroit Red Wings have placed defenseman Brendan Smith on seven day injured reserve with an infection in his hand.
In a corresponding move, the club recalled blue liner Xavier Ouellet from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
Smith suffered the injury Tuesday night in a fight with Nick Foligno of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Tuesday was Smith’s sixth career fight according to Hockeyfights.com.
In 18 games this season the 25-year-old has two goals and six points.
Ouellet, 21, appeared in four games with the Red Wings last season picking up two penalty minutes.
In 13 games with the Griffins, Ouellet has one goal and five points.
The Red Wings visit the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.
