Blackhawks recall Raanta, Johns from AHL

The Blackhawks recalled defenseman Stephen Johns on Monday and placed Trevor van Riemsdyk on long-term injured reserve the club announced.

Van Riemsdyk was injured while blocking a shot in Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Dallas Stars. The 23-year-old has one assist in 18 games with Chicago this season.

Johns, 22, is in his first full season in the American Hockey League where he has five assists in 16 games for the IceHogs. The Ellwood City, Pa. native was Chicago’s second round pick (60th overall) at the 2010 NHL Draft.

Chicago also recalled goaltender Antti Raanta and assigned Scott Darling to Rockford. The two swapped places on Saturday so Raanta could get a start in the AHL. Raanta made 33 saves in a 3-2 IceHogs win on Sunday. The Rauma, Finland, native is 1-2-0 in three games with the Blackhawks this season to go along with a .933 save percentage and 2.03 goals-against average.

Forward Joakim Nordstrom was also assigned to Rockford on Monday. The 22-year-old made his regular season debut on Sunday against the Stars.
