Better late than never: Hurricanes finally win

New York Islanders v Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes went 0-6-2 in the month of October, but they finally put that slump in the past with a 3-0 victory against Arizona tonight.

Elias Lindholm was a big part of the Hurricanes’ success tonight. The 19-year-old sophomore entered the game with just an assist in eight contests, but he found the back of the net 3:57 minutes into the contest and then added an insurance goal before the first intermission.

Jiri Tlusty accounted for the Hurricanes’ other goal.

Cam Ward turned aside just 25 shots to pick up his first shutout since March 27, 2012. The fact that he went over two and a half years between shutouts highlights both how much he’s fallen from grace and the injury troubles he’s ran into in recent years.

Speaking of goaltenders that haven’t lived up to their contracts, Mike Smith suffered his third straight loss to fall to 2-6-0 this season. In his defense though, he was peppered with 35 shots on goal tonight and its hard to put this loss squarely on him. Still, his 3.84 GAA and .873 save percentage through eight games leaves plenty to be desired.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres were silenced again as the race for the bottom continues. Our Jason Brough is betting that the Sabres are the lesser team and prophesied the Hurricanes win tonight:

Carolina will play against Los Angeles on Sunday.
