The losing streak the Boston Bruins had been mired in early on in this regular season ended Wednesday.

It was just a three-game skid, but certainly not a great start for a team that has been a dominant force in the Eastern Conference since the 2011 playoffs. Certainly enough for Bruins’ fans to get worried about.

The Bruins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout, giving them their second win of the young season. David Krejci and Reilly Smith scored the only two goals in the deciding skills competition. Had it not been for the play of Detroit’s goalie Jimmy Howard, who made 37 saves, the Bruins could’ve easily had two points locked up in regulation.

“That was a real tough win, but a win we deserved,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien said afterward. “It’s probably the best game we’ve played to this point, but Howard played very well.”

Gustav Nyquist, who now has three goals in three games to begin the season, scored the tying goal for Detroit in the third period, picking the corner on a perfect wrist shot that beat Tuukka Rask.

And, in one of the stranger plays of the evening, Boston assistant coach Doug Houda took a puck off the top of the head. He was attended to and received stitches, but returned to the Bruins bench.

Even Boston’s coaches are tough.
