The Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes entered this game both looking for their first victory. They fought hard, but in the end Buffalo earned a 4-3 shootout victory over Carolina.

Buffalo led for the better part of this contest, but the Hurricanes rallied back from a 3-1 deficit late in the third period with goals by Chris Terry and Zach Boychuk.

Boychuk’s goal didn’t immediately count, but he was awarded with the game-tying marker after a review.

Rather than concede to the shift in momentum though, the Sabres battled back in overtime. When that didn’t solve anything, Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth and Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward faced off in an eight-round shootout.

It was 20-year-old forward Zemgus Girgensons that finally broke the tie with a backhanded shot.

This was a big win for the Sabres after head coach Ted Nolan harshly criticized his team following Monday’s 5-1 loss to Anaheim. The Hurricanes at least picked up a point, but they will have to wait until Thursday’s game against the New York Rangers for their next chance to win.
