‘Let’s grow up and get rid of it': Milbury says it’s time to take fighting out of hockey (Video)

Mike Milbury

NHL on NBC analyst Mike Milbury -- who, according to HockeyFights, scrapped over 70 times during his career -- took a bold stance on the issue of fisticuffs on Wednesday night, saying it was time for the NHL to turf fighting altogether.

This isn’t the first time Milbury’s shown a distaste for the fight game. Back in 2011, he made a similar argument against staged scraps during a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. From the National Post:

Milbury, on national television, was advocating a more open and sensible debate on headshots, and weighing in against designated fighters in hockey. It was like seeing Don Cherry show up in shorts and a T-shirt.

“When you have the designated fighter on the end of the bench,” Milbury thundered Saturday night, on a panel that included Ron MacLean. “I think it’s wrong. I think it’s time to take a look at how to get rid of that, and what is the role of fighting … If you want it to be a part of the game at all.

“The only reason we have fighting in the game is because we like it. Don’t tell me [it polices the game], Ron. That’s logical hogwash.”
