Oilers sign Finnish sniper Pakarinen

IiroParkinen

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with Finnish forward Iiro Pakarinen on a two-year entry-level contract, the club announced on Monday.

Pakarinen, 22, showed good form with HIFK Helsinki of the Finnish league last season, finishing tied for ninth in the SM-liiga with 20 goals in 60 games. It was a breakout campaign for the 6-foot-1, 194-pounder, who’d never previously scored more than 10 goals in a single campaign.

Pakarinen’s good form carried over to the international stage, as he also played for Finland at the 2014 World Hockey Championships, scoring three goals in 10 games while helping the Finns to a silver medal.

A former Florida draftee (184th overall, 2011), Pakarinen never signed with the Panthers and became an unrestricted free agent.
