Which is pretty crazy, because exactly a year ago the headline on PHT read, “France beat Russia today.”
From TSN.ca:
France defeated Canada 3-2 in a shootout in the Group A opener of the world championship on Friday.
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored the lone shootout goal, while Stephane Da Costa scored twice in regulation for France.
With the win, France improves to 2-8 against Canada in world championship play. Their previous win came in 1995.
Canada got goals from Brayden Schenn and Erik Gudbranson, but that’s all the Olympic champs (minus all their Olympic players, of course) could manage in 36 shots against former NHL goalie Cristobal Huet.
France finished 13th at last year’s world championships. Its best ever finish in the tournament was sixth...in 1930.
Canada hasn’t won the world championships since 2007.
