On Wednesday, the NHL announced that Minnesota forward Matt Cooke had been suspended seven games for kneeing Colorado’s Tyson Barrie during Monday’s Game 3. It’s a stiff punishment and one that factors in Cooke’s history despite the fact that he’s technically not a repeat offender under the new CBA.
At the same time, Barrie suffered a MCL injury that will sideline him for up to six weeks and, as the league’s argument seems to suggest that Cooke was deliberate in his desire to strike Barrie with his knee.
