On Friday, Texas Stars forward Travis Morin was named the Les Cunningham Award winner as the AHL’s most valuable player for the 2013-14 season.
Morin, 30, he tore up the American League circuit, leading all scorers with 87 points -- in just 65 games -- while winning player of the month honors in both October and January.
A former ninth-round pick (Washington, 2003), Morin is something of a late bloomer. He’s never scored more than 66 points in a single AHL season, and that came while playing 76 games for Texas during the 2011-12 campaign. This year, Morin smashed that career high by 21 points...despite playing 11 fewer games.
As for his NHL stint, Morin did play a career-high 15:36 in a mid-March loss to Calgary this season, and notched his first-ever NHL point in the same game by registering an assist on a Jamie Benn goal.
