New Jersey Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky scored on Bruins goaltender Chad Johnson at 7:12 of the first period in this afternoon’s game, breaking the tie between Boston and the Los Angeles Kings for the fewest goals allowed.
Given that Los Angeles has played in its last game, that means that goaltender Jonathan Quick is the sole winner of the Jennings Trophy in 2013-14. The award goes the goaltender(s) that participate in at least 25 games with the team that finishes with the least goals allowed.
Quick only played in 49 contests, but because the rest of the starts were split between Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens, neither netminder played enough to qualify for his share of the award.
This is the first time that the Los Angeles Kings have ever captured the Jennings Trophy, but it’s the fourth time that a team coached by Darryl Sutter has claimed it. Quick is also the first goaltender to obtain sole possession of the award since it went to Martin Brodeur for his work in 2009-10.
