On Thursday, Bob Nicholson informed staff he’d be ending his 16-year tenure as the head of Hockey Canada.
Nicholson, who’s held dual roles and president and CEO since 1998, has enjoyed tremendous success during his time with the organization. Per CBC, Canada has won seven Olympic gold medals under Nicholson’s watch, along with 12 world junior titles and 15 world championships (five men’s, 10 women’s).

Nicholson is expected to maintain his position as vice president of the IIHF and his departure from Hockey Canada will also likely spark speculation of potential NHL interest.
It’s believed Hockey Canada will conduct a search as part of the process to replace Nicholson, however, Hockey Canada C.O.O, Scott Smith is considered the frontrunner for the job.
With the announcement, Nicholson ends his tenure by going out on top, having overseen the men’s and women’s team that captured Olympic gold in Sochi this past February.
