Peverley undergoes successful heart surgery

Just one week after collapsing from a cardiac event during a game, Dallas forward Rich Peverley underwent successful heart surgery on Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Here’s the statement from Stars GM Jim Nill:

“Rich Peverley underwent successful surgery to correct an abnormal heart rhythm at the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday, March 18. He is currently in normal sinus rhythm.

“He was released from the Cleveland Clinic today and is expected to return to Dallas tomorrow. He will be monitored closely and may require further treatment.

“There is no decision being made at this time on his ability to return to hockey participation.”

Peverley, 31, collapsed midway through the first period of last Monday’s game against Columbus, which the Blue Jackets led 1-0 at the time. The incident came after Peverley missed the preseason and Dallas’ season opener because of a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat -- two weeks ago, he’d been briefly held out of action as a precautionary measure because he “felt strange” following a game.
