Former Calgary Flames great Joe Nieuwendyk, who won a Stanley Cup there in 1989, had his No. 25 raised to the rafters at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.
The ceremony was held before the puck was dropped on the Flames and the visiting New York Islanders. Nieuwendyk played nine seasons in Calgary, scoring 314 regular season goals over that time.
“Well, it feels great,” Nieuwendyk told the Calgary Herald.
“So much of my early history, my start here with this organization … I’m very grateful. A lot of memories. A lot of former teammates that live in this area. It’s just a classy organization that’s rolling out the red carpet. It’s a little overwhelming.”
