The Washington Capitals have made adamant statements that Tom Wilson delivered a clean hit on Brayden Schenn on Tuesday. Following Thursday’s announcement that no supplemental discipline will take place, Caps GM George McPhee told the Washington Post that the league made the right decision.

“We agree with the league’s position that it was a clean hit. There should not have been a penalty on the play. It was a punishing hit, not predatory or otherwise illegal,” McPhee said. “Under our current rules, punishing but clean hits are permitted. We are happy that Tom Wilson was vindicated and Brayden Schenn is not injured.”

For the record, Brendan Shanahan didn’t necessarily say that Wilson, 19, didn’t deserve a penalty for his hit on Schenn, 22. Instead, he merely explained why there won’t be an additional fine or a suspension tacked onto the game misconduct and major penalty Wilson received.
